Anthropometric portrait of a woman from Africa. Hottentot is a term that was historically used by Europeans to refer to the Khoekhoe, the indigenous nomadic pastoralists in South Africa. From 1877 until 1912, the Jardin Zoologique d'Acclimatation was converted to l'Acclimatation Anthropologique. In mid-colonialism, the curiosity of Parisians was attracted to the customs and lifestyles of foreign peoples. The French photographer, Joannès Barbier (1854-1909), played a role in the development of popular human zoos, colonial ethnography exhibitions and indigenous villages.
