French ms. caption on verso: "Ci-joint la photo de 2 négresses à plateaux pour illustrer l'article que j'ai eu l'honneur de vous envoyer ce matin, sentiments dévoués" (illegible name). Jean Séréni (1883-1945) was an active photographer from 1905 to 1945. He took over the thriving business founded by his father Jean-Baptiste in 1874. He specialised in portraiture and then, from the late 1930s onwards, in identity photography.
