Very attractive manuscript copy of the emblem book of Leonard de Chaumelz
[Chaumelz, Leonard de]. "Devises Panegyriques pour Anne-dautriche Reine de France." Manuscript on paper, written in black ink in cursive by one hand, all leaves surrounded by a double line frame. France, late 17th or 18th century. 4to (233 x 173 mm). 36 leaves.

With 12 pen drawn round emblems within elaborate frames, glued on the pages. emblems ca. 55 mm, frames 93 x 108 mm.

Modern burgundy morocco with rounded edges. On the covers a blind tooled double fillet. Spine with 2 artificial raised bands and vertical gold tooled title. Marbled end leaves. Edges gilt. In matching marbled half morocco slipcase. (Signed in black on upper fly leaf "lobstein-laurenchet").
Very attractive manuscript based on the rare printed work by Léonard de Chaumelz, published in Bordeaux in 1667. The present manuscript contains the first 12 "Devises" with 12 emblematic pen drawings, the text and lay out is almost identical to that of the printed work, which contains a total of 40 "Devises" with 40 engravings. The beautifully drawn emblems and frames have the same size as in the printed book. Two of the drawings differ from the printed edition(our 11, printed 12 and our 12, printed 14). THis seems to be a fragment of a larger volume, it is bound in 3 gatherings of 12 leaves, numbered 18e, 19 and 20.

- Literature: For the printed emblem book: Adams / Rawles (et al.) A bibliography of French Emblem Books, F. 178; Praz 303; Gioranescu 17e siècle 18990.

- Condition: Paper a bit age toned; Else a fantastic copy.
