In a spectacular art déco binding by René Laurent with an ongoing design on all sides
Loti, Pierre. Pêcheur d'Islande. Préface de Louis Barthou. Paris, Aux dépens d'un amateur (=Charles Miguet), 1934. Large 4to. (310 x 245 mm). 4 blank leaves,[XII], 224, [8] pages; prospectus [4] pages; 4 blank leaves.

With 50 colour compositions of Lucien Simon engraved in wood by Pierre Bouchet.

Dark blue crushed morocco, flat spine.. An ongoing design in gold tooling over the spine and both covers, of a stormy sea with onlaid ivory leather waves. On the front cover a large ship with three masts in a dramatic scene. The title vertical on the spine in ivory leather onlays. Doublures of blue watered silk in a gold tooled broad frame of blue and ivory morocco. First free end leaves of the same watered silk followed by marbled end leaves. Yellow and blue silk endbands. Edges gilt. Original wrapper bound in. In matching slipcase. (Signed in gold on upper turn in: "r. laurent rel.").
Issued in 150 copies on Vélin d'Arches, this is no. 63 printed for Ge?ne?ral Jacques Willems. With an extra plate as frontispiece. in 2 states, one in colour on Japon, signed in pencil by Lucien Simon, one on arches in grey. This copy with an extra suite in grey on Arches in the first state. Bound up at the end is the rare 2 page prospectus with a manuscript note about the edition and signed by Miguet.

Added is als an autograph letter by Miguet to "Mon chèr collegue" (= Général Willems?) Paris, 1-11-1934, 2 p. in-8° with the printed address of Miguet. He gives many informations about this publication: «Avec de la patience, tout arrive ! Apre?s plusieurs anne?es de travail, mon «Pe?cheur d?Islande» illustre? par Lucien Simon parai?tra dans quelques semaines» (The "acheve? d?imprimer" is dated 30-11-1934) and he tells about the letter of Barthou which he recaived «moins de 24 heures avant son de?ce?s»

The excellent binder René Laurent was a pupil of Charles de Samblanx. He established his own company in 1919 in Namur and moved in 1927 to Brussels. He won three Grand Prix: Liège (1930), Brussels (1932) and Paris (1937).
