"One of the more reputable of the roving oculists of eighteenth cenury France, Gleize (1763-1811) was an advocate and successful practitioner of the extraction operation in cases of cataract. His works are generally free of pretentious claims which often characterize the writings of these itinerent oculists; however, he was not above using the poular press to extol his achievements" (Becker)
