One of the finest Dutch books on gardening and garden design with 190 handcoloured plates

With an engraved title page with a hand coloured vignette and 190 hand coloured plates of gardens, garden houses, bridges, artificial ruins and garden furniture.
Modern leather binding. On the covers a blind tooled border with fleurons on the corners. Spine with 5 raised bands, title tooled in gold and blind fleurons. Third edition of one of the main sources for English gardens and neo gothic and Chinoiserie garden architecture in the Netherlands. This copy without the often lacking 8-page "Generaal register van de tuinsieraden"
The book was first published by J. Allart in Amsterdam in 24 instalments between 1802 and 1809, a second edition appeared in 1819 by Jacobus de Ruyter. The third edition was announced in 1831, and published between 1832 and 1834. In all editions the plates are the same. Van Laar used J. G. Grohmann?s Ideenmagazin fur Liebhaber von Garten (Leipzig1796) as a source, as well as John Plaw?s English modelbook Ferme orne?e; or rural improvements (London, 1795), but most is of his own invention.
