The book was first published by J. Allart in Amsterdam in 24 instalments between 1802 and 1809, a second edition appeared in 1819 by Jacobus de Ruyter. The third edition was announced in 1831, and published between 1832 and 1834. In all editions the plates are the same. Van Laar used J. G. Grohmann?s Ideenmagazin fur Liebhaber von Garten (Leipzig1796) as a source, as well as John Plaw?s English modelbook Ferme orne?e; or rural improvements (London, 1795), but most is of his own invention.
