With 8 engraved maps and plans (7 folding) and 6 plates (2 folding, one large view on Paramaribo) all by Jan van der Schley.

Modern period style dark brown half calf. Flat spines tooled in gold, divided into compartments with central flowers and red title shield. Uncut.
First edition of this important and authoritative study on Guiana the slave trade. 'This description of the Wild Coast of America, its geography, history, inhabitants, animals, with an account of its discovery and the colonies of the Spaniards, French and Portuguese, is said by Mr. Warden to be by far the best work ever published on the countries described'. The author, Jan Jacob Hartsinck (1716-1779) was Director of the West India Company, and a man of very high standing, who had access to all the authorities". (Sabin).

-Provenance: 1) In pencil in vol. 1 on leaf *2: "Estate of Thea Heije-Oct. 1935 -2v. - 3.75". Thea Heye (1888-1935) was the wife of Museum of the American Indian (MAI) founder George Heye; 2) Verso title volume 1 with a round library stamp: "Cornell University Library RMC".

-Condition: This copy without the optional frontispice portrait, which is sometimes added from Wagenaar; Some light yellowing/ browning, minimal foxed spots; A fine uncut large paper copy in a beautiful period style binding.
