Extremely rare 17th century "plakalmanak" by Saetreuver
Almanach voor het jaer ons Heeren Jesu Christi anno 1699. [...] Ghecalculeert ende precijs ghestelt op den Meridiaen van Ghendt, door Mr: Theodor Caesmes. Mathematicus.Wesende het 55. werck sijnder Ephemeridum. Gent, Hendrick Saetreuver, 1699. Plano. (345 x 445 mm).

Printed within a decorative typographical border and with a woodcut of a lion protected by a woman in a hortus conclusus. Printed in red and black.
STCV 12924656 1 copy, Gent, which is heavily damaged. Very rare broadside almanach, text printed in 7 columns on one side. The first 6 columns contain the calender with the 12 months in two rows. In the 7th column is on the upper side the explanation and at the bottom the impressum. Indicated are also dates for "aderlaten".

The Plakalmanak of Theodor Caesmes is attested in the STCV from 1666 till 1700 (with gaps). Hoogendoorn gives also 1703, but he did not see this copy. From 1666-1685 it was printed by Bauduyn Manilius, from 1686 onwards by Hendrick Saetreuwer (active 1685-1705). According to the remark 55 year of the almanak, the first issue must have been in 1645. There are also other almanac series known of Caesmes.

There seem to be two or maybe three succeding persons with the name Theodor Caesmes: The first attested date of Caesmes on the title page of an almanac is 1666, the last year is 1759 on the Nieuwen Gendschen almanach and the Almanak edited by Petrus de Goesen. Adding to this the fact that his presumed first almanac was published in 1645, he should be active more than 114 years!

-Literature: Not in Hoogendoorn, Bibliography of the Exact Sciences in the Low Countries, Caesm 01 (p. 1206-1208); cf. Vanderhaeghen, Bibliographie Gantoise vol. 2, no. 1832.

-Condition: Professionally laid down; right upper corner ca 3 cm. missing with the loss of some letters; at some places the typographical border is minimal cut of; a few stains; some closed tears; in general a very acceptable copy of this extremely rare so called "plakalmanak".
