First edition of Dapper description of China
Gedenkwaerdig Bedryf der Nederlandsche Oost-Indische Maetschappye, op de Kuste en in het Keizerrijk van Taising of Sina: Behelzende Het Tweede Gezandschap aen den Onder-koning Singlamong en Veldheer Taising Lipoui; door Jan van Kampen en Konstantyn Nobel. [?] En Het Derde Gezandschap aen Konchy, Tartarsche Keizer van Sina en Oost-Tartarye: onder beleit van zijne Ed. Pieter van Hoorn. Beneffens een Beschryving van geheel Sina.
Amsterdam, Jacob van Meurs, 1670. 2 parts in 1 volume. Folio (330 x 215 mm).
With an engraved title page, 39 mostly double page plates and 57 engravings in the text all in strong impressions.
Blind tooled vellum with on the covers a large arabesque plate. Spine with 6 raised bands. First edition of this wellknown work on China, the second part in second issue with the four Chinese plates as indexed.
Contains descriptions of Pieter van Hoorn's ?first embassy?, Van Kampen and Nobel?s ?second embassy? to the Fukien vice-roy and Van Hoorn?s ?third embassy? to the Chinese emperor. The second part is a description of China?s geography, history and customs. The book includes one of the earliest accounts of Taiwan.
Later translations into English appeared under the titles Remarkable Addresses to Two Embassies, The Second & Third Embassies to ye Empire of Taysing or China and Atlas Chinensis.
Dapper (1636-1689) was a Dutch geographer and historian. His books about exotic countries were translated in several languages and popular in many countries, although he never visited any of the places he described.

-Condition: Title page some light staining; most plates slightly browned; 4 plates lower margin binders knife touched the plates (p.122, p. 204, p.284, p. 436); Else a fine and agreable copy.
