273 coats of arms 1266-1753, including the Governors of the Dutch East Indies 1610-1743

[COAT OF ARMS – LOW COUNTRIES]. [Armorial of the Bishopric of Liège and of officials of and associated with the Low Countries].
[Utrecht or vicinity?, ca. 1740-ca. 1753]. Folio (33 x 21.5 cm). Manuscript armorial with 273 coats of arms (plus 7 with names and information but with the arms left blank), nearly all coloured and (where appropriate) with gold and silver, the dated ones ranging from 1266 to 1753. Contemporary blind-tooled sprinkled calf.    €7.500

A manuscript armorial with 273 coats of arms, mostly of governmental or ecclesiastical officials, in several chronological series, nearly all coloured and with gold and silver where appropriate. Most of the manuscript captions give the dates the people were instated in the positions noted. It was produced beginning ca. 1740 with some additions to 1753, possibly in Liège but more likely in the Netherlands (perhaps in or near Utrecht).
Of special interest are the arms of the Governors of the Dutch East Indies 1610-“1740” [recte 1743?]). These are followed by the arms of the Teutonic Knights of the Order of Jerusalem, associated with Utrecht, 1266-1753, plus the arms of the Order itself and 2 related ones. The last and longest series gives the arms of the representatives at the Congress of Utrecht (1712-1713) which negotiated the transfer of the Southern Netherlands from the Spanish Habsburgs to the Austrian Habsburgs. Many of these representatives were not from the Low Countries.
With bookplate and library stamp. In good condition, with some early repairs to the corners or backs of a few leaves. The boards are warped and the hinges cracked, with a few small defects on the back board, but the tooling remains clear.

Rare French edition of the adventures of Ulenspiegel, in black morocco by one of the leading binders in Paris

[ULENSPIEGEL].
Amsterdam, Nicolas Chevalier, 1702. 12mo. With engraved title-page showing an owl looking at itself in a mirror with Ulenspiegel wearing a fool’s cap watching. Black morocco by Hippolyte Duru, with his stamp (“DURU 1849”) on flyleaf, blind-tooled fillets on spine and boards, richly gold-tooled turns ins, gilt edges. € 6.500

Rare French edition of the legendary farcical tales of the Dutch/German Ulenspiegel, uplifted to folk hero in the well-known 19th-century retelling by Charles De Coster, who portrays Ulenspiegel as having major influence in the Dutch revolt against Spain, while continuously eating, drinking and playing pranks. It is mostly these last three elements that make up the plot of the stories from the original tradition, but of course they also reveal the vices of the lower and middle classes. The stories soon appeared on the Catholic list of prohibited books.
The present edition was published at Amsterdam by the historian, coin collector, bookseller and occasional publisher, Nicolas Chevalier. After a preface discussing the new translation from the German, the book contains 46 stories followed by an epitaph in verse and Ulenspiegel’s last will, also in verse in eleven stanzas.
The binding is made by Hippolyte Duru (1803-1884), one of the leading binders in Paris. Already at the beginning of his career, at the 1844 Paris exposition, Duru was noted as one of the “plus remarquable et de plus parfait” binders in the revival of historical styles (Devauchelle, Le reliure en France II, p. 199).
Only some very minor wear to the spine, but otherwise in fine condition.
Brunet V, col. 1005; STCN (3 copies); Koopmans & Verhuyck 38 (7 copies, incl. 2 the same as STCN); WorldCat (6 copies, adding 2 not in STCN and Koopmans & Verhuyck); for Duru: Fléty, p. 65.

Vroegop/Schoonveld. ALL, the complete work. Booksculpture : 27,1 x 27,1 x 12 cm. 1.000 pages, 5,8 KG. Limited edition: 12pcs. 2014. Close cooperation and full coordination between the Dutch artists duo Vroegop/Schoonveld and a local printer + a traditional Chinese bookbinder have been the focus of the production of ALL. At the same time, craftsmanship, artistic engagement, research and international cultural exchange played crucial roles. The work itself tackles the confrontation and cross-fertilization between cultures, while connecting Chinese tradition and philosophy with contemporary art. This work refers to a part of Chinese culture that is closely related to the concept of duality which is apparent in the two most significant ritual vessels from Chinese ancient times: Bi and Cong. The squareness of the Cong refers to the earth and the round hole in the middle to the meeting of heaven and earth creating all that materially exists. Contrasting forms and concepts are balanced within one object. Quality materials, the skilled work of the bookbinder and woodworker, are important to experience the energy and transformative power of this concept. ALL is bridging contrasting cultural traditions and contributing to the dialogue between East and West. €1200,00

Galle; text in Dutch. A few plates with some discoloring on the verso; one stamp on the first free endpaper; two stamps in the lower blank margin of the titlepage; library-sticker on the frontcover; corners a bit bumped; otherwise a very good copy.  € 850

Teirlinck, Herman – ‘Kunst. € 450
