Engraved front piece, 46 folding copper plate engravings. Contemporary vellum and raised spine bands. The standard period anatomical textbook, oft re-issued, which, according to Choulant, replaced Bertholin's textbook. The revised 1710 edition is much preferred. Verheyen went to Louvain in 1675 to study theology, but after the amputation of a foot studied medicine at Louvain and Leyden instead, obtaining his medical degree from the University of Louvain in 1683. Te Haarlem by J. Bosch, 1778. First edition of a finely illustrated work, entirely devoted to invertebrates, observed by means of the microscope. Martinus Slabber (1741-1835) was a well-known and industrious physician in his time. He issued the present work in 18 parts. Each part is dedicated to different persons, either prominent citizens of or politically involved with the Dutch province of Zeeland. Also each part contains a plate, engraved by R. Muys after P.M. Brasser, or M. Slabber. After the title-page follows an index with the Latin and the Dutch names of the animals described by Slabber. Half calf with marbled boards. Boards slight worn on the surface and edges. End papers secures to spine with restoration tape. "By Simon Abbes Gabbema; with notes by Tobias Gutberleth. First Gouda edition. Second part contains biographies of the saints Willibrord, Boniface and Alberic. Title page by P. Sluyter. 6 full-page plates of coins, 2 full-page portraits of St. Willibrord and Boniface, 14 plates showing 28 half page illustrations. Gabbema (1628-1688) was appointed history writer of Friesland in 1659. However, in this capacity, he did not publish anything during his lifetime. Gabbema was mainly known for his collection of laws, chronicles and letters. He did however write Friesche lustgaarde and revised the second edition of Gysbert Japix’ Friesche Rymlerye. Several of Gabbema’s unpublished works were published after his death by Tobias Gutberleth. Examples include the History of Friesland from 1190 to 1573 (1703) and Nederlandsche watervloeden (also 1703). Dutch Floods examines chronologically the floods that took place in the Netherlands from 860.
